In a harrowing incident that could have ended in tragedy, an American Airlines plane caught fire on the runway at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Thursday afternoon, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky and passengers scrambling to evacuate.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time, just as American Airlines Flight 383 was preparing for departure. The Boeing 767, bound for Miami, was accelerating down the runway when pilots were alerted to a catastrophic engine failure. Almost immediately, flames and smoke began to pour from the aircraft’s right engine.
Passengers aboard the flight described a terrifying scene. “We were speeding up and suddenly there was this loud bang,” said Rachel Simmons, a passenger seated near the wing. “I looked out the window and saw flames and black smoke. People started yelling and the flight attendants were trying to keep us calm.”
The pilots aborted the takeoff and brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway. The cabin crew swiftly initiated emergency evacuation procedures. Within moments, all 161 passengers and nine crew members were instructed to exit the plane using the emergency slides.
Chicago Fire Department personnel were already stationed nearby and responded within seconds. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, preventing further damage to the aircraft and stopping the fire from spreading to the fuel tanks.
Miraculously, there were no fatalities. However, 21 people were reported to have sustained minor injuries, mostly during the evacuation process. Several were taken to local hospitals for treatment but were released later the same evening.

According to a statement released by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the fire was caused by an “uncontained engine failure,” a rare but serious mechanical event in which parts of the engine break apart at high speed. Pieces of debris were reportedly found scattered on the runway, further supporting the mechanical failure theory.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the incident. Inspectors were seen examining the engine remnants and reviewing flight data recorders retrieved from the aircraft.
American Airlines confirmed the incident in a press release and emphasized the quick actions of its crew. “We are incredibly thankful that all passengers and crew were safely evacuated. The professionalism and bravery of our pilots, flight attendants, and emergency responders ensured this did not become a far more tragic event,” the airline stated.
The Boeing 767 involved in the fire has been in service for over 20 years, raising questions about the longevity and maintenance standards of aging aircraft in commercial fleets. Boeing issued a brief statement expressing concern and pledging full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
The incident caused major disruptions at O’Hare International Airport, one of the busiest in the world. Several runways were temporarily closed, and dozens of flights were delayed or canceled as emergency crews cleared debris and conducted safety checks. By late evening, normal operations had resumed, though the ripple effects of the disruption were felt for several hours.
Aviation experts note that while airplane fires on runways are extremely rare, they serve as a stark reminder of the importance of rigorous maintenance and emergency preparedness. “This could have been catastrophic if the crew hadn’t reacted as quickly and professionally as they did,” said aviation analyst Tom Barlow. “What we saw today was a textbook example of how training and protocols save lives.”

In the aftermath, passengers from Flight 383 praised the crew for their calm and decisive actions. “They saved our lives,” said Simmons. “It was chaos, but they kept shouting instructions and helped us stay focused. I don’t even remember hitting the slide—I just knew I had to get out.”
As investigators work to determine the exact cause of the failure, American Airlines has grounded several other aircraft of the same model for precautionary inspections. The airline has also offered counseling services to affected passengers and crew and pledged to provide alternative transportation and full refunds.
While the outcome could have been far worse, the incident serves as a potent reminder of the razor-thin line between routine and disaster in air travel. For those aboard Flight 383, it was a terrifying close call—but thanks to swift action and preparedness, it was a tragedy narrowly avoided.
