In a harrowing incident that could have ended in tragedy, an American Airlines plane caught fire on the runway at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Thursday afternoon, sending plumes of black smoke into the sky and passengers scrambling to evacuate.
The incident occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. local time, just as American Airlines Flight 383 was preparing for departure. The Boeing 767, bound for Miami, was accelerating down the runway when pilots were alerted to a catastrophic engine failure. Almost immediately, flames and smoke began to pour from the aircraft’s right engine.
Passengers aboard the flight described a terrifying scene. “We were speeding up and suddenly there was this loud bang,” said Rachel Simmons, a passenger seated near the wing. “I looked out the window and saw flames and black smoke. The Boeing 767 involved in the fire has been in service for over 20 years, raising questions about the longevity and maintenance standards of aging aircraft in commercial fleets. Boeing issued a brief statement expressing concern and pledging full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
The incident caused major disruptions at O’Hare International Airport, one of the busiest in the world. Several runways were temporarily closed, and dozens of flights were delayed or canceled as emergency crews cleared debris and conducted safety checks. By late evening, normal operations had resumed, though the ripple effects of the disruption were felt for several hours.

In the aftermath, passengers from Flight 383 praised the crew for their calm and decisive actions. “They saved our lives,” said Simmons. “It was chaos, but they kept shouting instructions and helped us stay focused. I don’t even remember hitting the slide—I just knew I had to get out.”
As investigators work to determine the exact cause of the failure, American Airlines has grounded several other aircraft of the same model for precautionary inspections. The airline has also offered counseling services to affected passengers and crew and pledged to provide alternative transportation and full refunds.
