A private helicopter crashed into the sea near the Vouliagmeni marina in southern Athens around midday Sunday, with all five occupants – four American citizens and a local pilot – rescued in good health, according to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.
The helicopter had taken off moments earlier from nearby Astera in Vouliagmeni when the pilot reportedly detected a mechanical malfunction, state broadcaster ERT reported.
Given the aircraft’s low altitude, the pilot instructed the four passengers to exit immediately. Based on initial reports, the passengers jumped onto land, not into the sea, but this detail remains unconfirmed. The pilot remained on board in an attempt to stabilize the aircraft, ERT reported.
Unable to regain control, the helicopter ultimately plunged into the water. The pilot was rescued by divers, according to ERT. No injuries were reported.
All five occupants have been taken to a hospital in nearby Voula for medical tests.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the malfunction and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
